Alessandra motioned to Franco and Melinda from the back of the bakery. “I’ll hold this table. Franco, I need a large dark coffee and anything sweet. Mel, I just need to run to the bathroom quickly. You have to go?”

Melinda looked at Alessandra, not hiding her disdain, as she sat down. “Better put some cover on your nose, Sandra.”

Alessandra pursed her lips and sat back down.

“I don’t use the way I used to, Mel. I can’t. We all did crazy shit in our youth. You’re hardly one to judge me.”

“You’re right. I partied hard, too, but I quit when I saw that you could snort milk up your nose and then blow it out of your left eye socket. That scared the shit out of me. Your skull around your eyes and nose, Sandra, probably looks like swiss cheese. One day, you’ll snort a line and that coke booger will end up in your brain. Lights out.”

“I know what I’m doing, Mel. I’ve cut way ...”

Melinda stared at the racks of bread and quietly scoffed at the tendentious argument that had become routine whenever the talk of substance abuse arose between the two of them.

“You remember why Jack left you, Sandra? I know you don’t want to hear this. You need help. I’ve known you since grade school. I can see what’s been going on for years. Jack walked out of your and Donato’s life because he had had enough. He saved himself. You’ve never gotten over that. And now look where we are? What the fuck are we doing up here?”

“I told you why. I ran into Donato. We got to talking about the old days. I asked if he’d―”

Melinda grabbed the edges of the table and shook it hard. She was livid at her best friend and angry with herself for having agreed to the trip.

“Look at me, Sandra.” Melinda’s eyes darkened as she glowered at Alessandra. “I am sick to death of your lies. You fucked Donato. I know that for a fact. Then you went and told your psycho brother that Jack was visiting with a friend of his.”

“Friend?” Alessandra snorted. “His girlfriend who we cornered at The Tides. I wanted to rip her face off.”

“So, what?” Melinda clenched her jaw and locked a hand around Alessandra’s wrist. She began to hiss.

“You know what your brother is doing? Do you? I know you do. He’s mixing oxy with alcohol, and,” Melinda leaned over the table and spewed, “he’s been juicing. Have you noticed his size? Do you have any idea what that does to your brain? He couldn’t wait to get here to settle an old score with Jack. He’s fucking crazed thanks to you. Does it even matter to you that someone might die this time?”

Alessandra smiled and pulled away to get up. She turned to look at Melinda.

“I just wanted to say hello. You’d better calm down, Mel. You’re becoming hysterical.”

“You two having a sisterly chat?” Franco laughed and pushed a coffee and muffin in front of Melinda.
